The Amazing Feejee Mermaid! (From Borneo.)

Here's a picture of the finished product.
I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

If you ever try to follow my instructions and make your own mermaid, please let me know! I'd love to see what I managed to inspire!

For those who landed directly on this post, here's links to the whole tutorial:

Part 1: In which we discuss the flaying of the fish
Part 2: In which we discuss the mounting of the skin
Part 3: In preparation for the application of skin
Part 4: In which we add flesh to the beast
Part 5: In which we finish the job

Here's also a link to a tutorial on how to make the manuscript you see on the left of the picture

If you enjoyed this, please let me know!

  1. It's sooo fantastic and it's been a really fun read too. I just might have to give it a go :)

  2. thank youuuu! You better give it a go :p and share pictures!! I'd love to see your take on this.

  3. Amazing!!!! I would, too, like to try this. Got your link from Craftster.
..btw...I think I may know you from BME? I could be look very familiar.

  4. I can't believe people actually want to try out taxidermy because of me! best day of my life XD be sure to post pictures on your blog! and yeah, you might know me from BME^^ ya got an IAM account?

  5. I deleted my account over 2 years ago, it started to get pretty messy over there but I was Tatjanaturtle. I met a lot of AMAZING Canadians while on bme...had the account for about 4 years I guess..maybe less...and traveled many a time to Canada to visit friends. :)'s a little quirky in my head...I am vegan, but really think I'd like to try this out. I love what you've done...absolutely. Thanks for the tips and tricks, they're going to come in helpful no doubt.

  6. Hmmm... Tatjanaturtle you say? I don't have any messages to or from you in my IAM IMs, but we might have frequented the same forums some time ago...

Well, if you're vegan, see taxidermy as a way to recycle the waste made by meat-eaters :P It's been a pleasure to share the tips, it was almost as fun to write as it was to make.

  7. this was great! of course, I don't see myself trying to skin a fish or anything, but if it ever comes to a point where I would need to then i know what to do with it!

  8. This may seem odd, but this makes me want to try making a model of a person but with chicken skin for cover, and the arms and legs of a chicken.

Very cool project. And extremely creepy

  9. One of the things that has always stayed with me my entire life is the Fiji Mermaid mummy I saw at a Ripley's museum when I was little. I saw the picture of your mermaid on Craftster - and I just had to comment and tell you that yours looks fabulous. :)

  10. Feejee like the mermaid in Tales of Mu?

    Neat reference, very cool art.

  11. I want to buy it. My names Nick, I own a sideshow, this would be lovely. Please email me at

  12. I am finally going to do it. Got a fish on Tuesday and froze it. Going to skin it today. I'll send pictures.

  13. You have some amazing skills. Thanks for the photos. I would love to try this but I can’t work the link. How can I access your tutorial?
